The Madre de Dios region has to offer the visitor an incredible amount of natural scenery that will undoubtedly catch more than one traveler interested in exploring the mysteries and attractions that the Peruvian jungle has to offer. One of those unmissable scenarios of Madre de Dios is Lake Sandoval, which is located in the Tambopata Candamo National Reserve.
At an ecotourism level, Lake Sandoval is considered the most beautiful in the Peruvian jungle. This lake occupies an area of 3 km long by 1 km wide and its depth ranges between half a meter and three meters. The shape of the lake is that of a crescent and its waters are generally 26 ° C.
Lake Sandoval not only stands out for its beauty, but also for the diversity of fish that it presents in its waters. Due to the rich flora found in its waters, Lake Sandoval stands out not only for the quantity, but also for the size of the fish it has, among which you can find paiches of up to 200 kg.
Lake Sandoval is also attractive for those who like bird watching, since thanks to the vegetation it has in its mangroves and surroundings, it is the habitat of a population of more than a thousand species of birds, between migratory and resident, many of which are under threat. One of the most interesting species in the group is the Hoatzin.
In addition to bird watching, the observation of animals in general of the ecosystem of this lake is also another attractive activity, it is important to say that Lake Sandoval is the habitat of a varied population of species, many of which are under threat, among they are the giant otter, the black caiman, among many others.
Although Sandoval Lake is mainly attractive on an ecological level, certain activities that can be carried out in it are also interesting, such is the case of navigation, which is preferable to practice in the place between the months of April to November, when it is not posible the rainy season. The waters of Lake Sandoval are also attractive for those who like to swim in them in the company of the more than 6 thousand species of fish that populate it.
In order to get to Lake Sandoval, the traveler has to go to Puerto Maldonado, from this place, he must rent a boat, which in approximately thirty minutes will take him to the banks of the Madre de Dios River, from this point, you only need to walk, by an average of 4.3 kilometers to the lake. The walk to the lake is a great trekking route that can take between an hour and a half to two, depending on the physical conditions of the traveler and the weather conditions, it must be borne in mind that traveling in the rainy season makes the path more difficult, product of the mud that forms on the way.
To access Lake Sandoval, it is necessary to pay for an entrance ticket to the Tambopata Reserve, the cost of which is S / 30.00 per day. The entrance to the park is always in the company of authorized guides.

Day 1 Puerto Maldonado / Monkey Island / Treks
Pick up from the airport and / or land terminal transfer to the office where you can leave some luggage that you will not take to the tour. Then transport to the port (port captaincy) 15 minutes by boat down the river, along the Madre de Dios river in a motorized boat that will take us to our lodge, where we will settle in our comfortable rooms, then accompanied by our guide we will hike through the trails of the lodge where our guide will explain the fauna and flora that inhabit this area. Afterwards we will have lunch and then travel in our boat for 20 minutes until we reach the island of the monkeys, a great opportunity to see 5 species of monkeys that inhabit this island, then we will prepare to return to the lodge, and back at sunset we will observe alligators with With the help of our flashlights, we can see the red eyes of the alligators and your guide will explain everything related to the alligators, return to the lodge where we will spend the night in our comfortable lodge.

DAY 2 Parrot clay lick / Tambopata Reserve “Lago Sandoval” / Caimaneo
Very early in the morning at 5:00 am we will go to visit the parrot clay lick la cachuela, in a trip of approximately 50 minutes, where it is possible to see a variety of species of parrots that gather on the wall of the Madre de Dios river. eat clay in a multicolored show of flights and screams, an experience you will never forget. After we return to the lodge for breakfast, then we will prepare to change the lodge on Lake Sandoval, we will spend one night inside the Tambopata reserve, with the Mejía family from our lodge we will travel 10 minutes by boat until we reach the shores of the port of Lake Sandoval From where we will enter the Tambopata Reserve «Lago Sandoval» in a walk of approximately 1 hour, then we will arrive at the lake where we will take a rowing canoe to walk through this beautiful lake that houses a great variety of birds and animals. We will arrive at the family lodge, where we will settle in our rooms, then at noon we will have lunch at Lake Sandoval, after lunch those who wish can swim in Lake Sandoval without any danger, then we will return to our lodge, dinner and then a night walk to see some animals and / or insects that come out at night return to our lodge where we will spend the night in our comfortable lodge.
Day 3 Palm clay lick / Tambopata Reserve “Lago Sandoval” / return to Amazon Lodge
Very early in the morning we will get up and take the rowing canoe to paddle across Lake Sandoval until we reach a place where it is possible to see a palm tree clay lick, where hundreds of macaws come to eat the dry palm trees, which contain a high content of mineral salts necessary for their digestion. Then we will return to our family lodge, for breakfast and after breakfast we will hike through the trails of the tambopata reserve, return for lunch, after lunch we prepare to return to our lodge for our first night «Amazon Lodge Tambopata» Accommodation in our rooms in our lodge, then we will do a night walk, return to the lodge for dinner, we will spend the night in our comfortable lodge.
Day 4 Transfer Lodge – Puerto Maldonado – Airport
After breakfast, around 8:30 am. We will transfer you in our motorized boat to Puerto Maldonado, and from there to the airport and / or bus terminal.
